Taronga 51 Aldabra Giant Tortoise

It’s one thing to connect with the eyes of a primate like a gorilla or chimpanzee, they are so similar to humans that it makes it easy to relate. It’s another thing to connect with the something a little less similar us. I’m always really happy if I can get a shot of an animal that shows real personality.

Do you ever feel like you’ve been carrying the weight of the world around on your shoulders all week and then you finally get time to yourself and you just collapse in a heap?

Aldabra Giant Tortoises are one of the world’s largest tortoises, living to over 150 years of age and weighing up to 250kg. Their small islands habitats in the Indian Ocean allowed them to evolve their giant size.

Although protected today, they were hunted in large numbers for their meat and oil by early seafarers in the 17th to 19th centuries.
